Mike Stern, Who Let The Cats Out ?, Heads Up, 2008

Dès le premier morceau de Who Let The Cats Out ?

Who Let The Cats Out ? : Jim Beard, Richard Bona, Chris Minh Doky, Bob Franceschini, Roy Hargrove, Anthony Jackson, Bob Malach, Grégoire Maret, Meshell Ndegeocello, Kim Thompson, Dave Weckl et Victor Wooten.

Who Let The Cats Out ?

It's a bilingual post. Caroline de Benedetti tries its best to translate.

Mike Stern, Who Let The Cats Out ?, Heads Up, 2008

The first time I heard Mike Stern was on Fat Times (Miles Davis The Man with the Horn, Columbia, 1981) and I told myself god damned, one can make that in jazz !?! To barge into to throw in a solo with an amazing hard rock blues guitar set-up.

From the first song in Who Let The Cats Out ? Mike Stern drifts from a full and bop guitar sound to a sharp metal flash mixed with hard rock. Kim Thompson (drums) and Chris Minh Doky (bass) for rythmics, Bob Franceschini on sax and Jim Beard on piano and organ groove real good with a catchy refrain ; you already know that you embark on a trip where it will be good to admire the landscape. The transition with KT, kind of unusual ballad, fully confirms it. Mike has surrounded himself with great musicians and lets each one express itself. Songs are possessed, sand and bluesy cactus atmosphere on Texas where the excellent harmonicist Grégoire Maret has fun ; a hell of hard bop with scat time from bass player Richard Bona on Good Question (it sounds less successfull to me, too much aerial on Language and All You Need) ; jumpy bop for Leni Goes Shopping with Thelonious Monk's fabulous disjointed rhythms haunting ; funky groove on Roll With It with Bob Malach on saxophone ; a Who Let The Cats Out ? driven at 140 mph that you imagine swimed in Eastern Europe brass bands (Roy Hargrove and Bob Franceschini have something to do with it) ; We're With You a ballad between nostalgia, hope and the fulfillment where Mike Stern plays classical guitar and final with Blue Runway, an escapade, like a road movie from blues to rock via funk and jazz, a title that perfectly summarize how Mike Stern can captivate listeners, immerse them, with jazz - this undefinable freedom - in line of sight. An album you will wear away and once worn it will sleep for a time to come back regularly on the turntable.

Here is the list of musicians who participated in the recording of Who Let The Cats Out ? : Jim Beard, Richard Bona, Chris Minh Doky, Bob Franceschini, Roy Hargrove, Anthony Jackson, Bob Malach, Grégoire Maret, Meshell Ndegeocello, Kim Thompson, Dave Weckl and Victor Wooten.

You already knew Dave Weckl's drummer talents, but you here find out that Kim Thompson surely is a drummer to follow closely. By the way, you will notice that the booklet notes are signed by Bill Milkowski, reviewer for Jazz Times and Jazziz.
